Apparently, this one hasn’t surfaced on wipfilms before. As if the filmmakers were trying to imitate “classier” movies like The Young Runaways and all those other exploitation films hitting the circuits around the late ’60s and ’70s, the folks who brought us FUGITIVE LOVERS (aka THE RUNAWAYS, aka STARCROSSED LOVERS) jam-pack their flick with just about everything they could. Our favorite Steve Oliver (Savage Abduction) stars as a pool cleaner who finds a mostly-dead Sondra Currie (another fave here) face down in the pool at the Bel Air home of a prominently shady lobbyist played by John Russell. Falling for Sondra, Steve takes her under his wing, and the two go on a motorcycle adventure – wherein Russell’s goons lurk every step of the way. Virginia Mayo, Toni Covington (who produced), Roger Galloway, Jeff Morrow, Juanita Moore, Vincent Barbi, Napoleon Whiting, Avil Williams, Frankie Darro (in his last film), and Gus Peters are also featured. Written, edited, and directed by private detective-turned-filmmaker John Carr (whom the IMDb also lists as the uncredited “Supervising Detective” for the project).
Drugs, thugs, prison lesbians (WIP), hicksploitation tunes, bikers, bikinis, John Russell’s trademarked mustache, a cameo by Doodles Weaver, suicide, homicide, a waning Virginia Mayo, FUGITIVE LOVERS has it all – even a video-generated title card from the grey-market video label that distributed it. Speaking of which, this rip is culled from the original big box Mark V International NTSC VHS release, which ends as a song begins to play for what I presume SHOULD have been the end credits. The company wasn’t a very thorough one, obviously. The quality of this cassette wasn’t Grade-A material by the time it got in my hands, so I’m sticking with making an AVI until something better comes along (there are potentially semi-legit DVDs of the film available on eBay and Amazon).
Either way, you shan’t be disappointed with the sleaze/cheese factor here. Enjoy!
