Psycho Holocaust adheres strictly to it’s influences, never deviating from or skewing the tried and true blueprints of the backwoods horror genre. And it’s as intentionally devoid of fun as it is of originality – taking itself completely seriously in an effort to be brutal and harrowing, despite how fucking absurd it often is. Effectiveness will hinge on the viewer’s ability to separate himself from the film’s largely looming influences, but PH’s almost aggressive refusal to reverse or twist the usual cliches and staples or ever wink knowingly at anything makes it perhaps more legit than it should be. An interesting, if shaky, effort to retread well-worn territory.
