Description: During the period of 1964 to 1985, Brazil lived a military dictatorship. In the 60’s, the Dominican friars Tito, Betto, Fernando and Ivo help leftist organizations, but they are arrested and tortured by the despicable Chief of DOPS Fleury, who is trying to arrest the leader Carlos Marighella. Tito and Fernando do not resist the violent torture they are submitted and betray Marighella, who is ambushed and executed by Fleury. In 1973, in France, the exiled friar Tito is unable to overcome his trauma and depression and commits suicide in the Convent of La Tourette.

Review: As with almost every Brazilian film I’ve ever seen, this film is disturbing. Probably because the torture it depicts typifies North American perception of the brutality of, if not Brazil today, assuredly the Brazil of 40 years ago. The main actor of “Batismo De Sangue” called Caio Blat also played in some others Brazilian pictures, like Bog of Beasts and a rape/revenge film Cama de Gato. It’s not as brutal as many Brazilian flicks, but the veneer it’s wrapped in serves it up colder than, say, a micro-budget sady baby shitfest.
