Description: Provided for your entertainment, a Criterion Collection DVD-rip of Philip Kaufman’s (Henry and June and Invasion of the Body Snatchers) 1988 doomed love story, Unbearable Lightness of Being, based upon Milan Kundeira’s novel of the same name starring a trio of very young Daniel Day Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche.
Review: This American movie, which is a variation on the themes of the novel of the Czech emigrant Milan Kundera, became one of the films of the 1988 season. That was, of course, is connected not only with the twentieth anniversary of those tragic events, when in August 1968 in Prague tanks entered the Warsaw Pact countries. First of all, the authors of the film failed (and first of all this should be said about the Director Filipe Kaufmane) hurt «nerve time», make the story is equally close and attractive not only Czechs but practically for audiences in many countries and, most importantly, for Americans, a little concerned about what is not included in the scope of their «national interests».
Of course, you could explain the increased attention to the «Unbearable lightness of being» adult content picture (here and here it was first shown at the Moscow film festival in the framework of the program, devoted to the topic of sex in the cinema). But, as in the case of «politically criminal plot, provocative erotic, fortunately, did not become an end in itself (unlike the subsequent work Kaufman, «Henry and June» about the writer Henry Miller, his wife and mistress, writer anais NIN).
Director of the «Unbearable lightness of being» together with his co-writer, Frenchman Jean-Claude Quarry, known for fruitful cooperation with Luis Bunuel, pulled out a big novel Kundera only the storyline and cast her as if in a three-movement Sonata form: Andante, Scherzo and Adagio. Young neurosurgeon Tomas carefree spending time in the romantic adventures, conquering women and refined intellectuals type of artist Sabina, and externally like provincial waitresses Teresa. He does not even know that the whole life will change dramatically after the Prague events of August 1968.

Just a request. Can you change the category to “uncategorized”? We all love softcore/erotic films, but this movie is really great, too important.

Well, film itself balance everything properly as I’m familiar with communism first hand. But as in all political movies the end message is missing as main characters accidently die. Sure people die but if I watch this flick I am not dead and expect a message.
