Description:A teenage journalist is welcomed to remain in a religious hostel run by a baleful, tricky nun who plays fatal mental games with the residents. The Tempter doesn’t fit perfectly into a solitary style: Part Giallo, part nunsploitation, part dedicated meditation on Catholicism and sexual guilt. As with many European movies of the 70’s there is also a intense governmental thread to the story which covers the Catholic Church’s steps during the Holocaust and its participation in Latin American politics. This movie fulfills a major gap in director Damiano Damiani’s greatly varied filmography which is quite well symbolized on this site. It is not his greatest flick, in my view, but it has its moments, and it has a subtle, highly reasonable character portrait by Glenda Jackson, which makes her character all the more frightening. As always Morricone’s score takes the film into another dimension.
