Description: Rokula vampire who lost his beloved a few centuries ago. She was killed by a pirate with a prosthetic leg instead. Vampire did nothing to try to save her. Now he is suffering from this painful curse. He knows that his love periodically reincarnated in another woman that constantly kills legged pirate. This continues over and over again for a long time.

Review: Shot in 1988 and shelved through production company The Cannon Group’s demise finally given a cursory and very limited release in 1990, this horror comedy musical is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t likable, endearing, and ultimately quite infectious. This is owed in no small part to its shambling Saturday morning Children’s Theatre tone, a very affable Thomas Dolby, an embarrassed Bo Diddley, and most of all to the sexy, spirited appearance of Toni Basil as Rockula’s MILF. A single scene from Rockula has made me, I’m sure, a lifetime Toni Basil fan.

Adding to its new-wave pedigree are appearances by then-wife of DEVO’s Mark Mothersbaugh, Nancye Ferguson, and DEVO offspring as “Visiting Kids,” performing a number (“The United State of Beat”) that sounds very much like late-period DEVO (particularly Smooth Noodle Maps) and was no doubt composed at least partly by the band. An album was released exclusively in France, in 1990, by “Visiting Kids,” though this track was absent.
