Description:
I LOVE this movie, which is why I upgraded it. Imagine Dumb and Dumber but filmed as an Italian neo-realist film such as The Bicycle Thief. This movie is still panned by many Canadians as being depressing and showing us as stupid and pathetic. Me, I laugh and laugh at this movie as I do with few others.
It is best appreciated if you watch with the mindset that this is a long string of Good News/Bad News jokes – Goodnews: You get a job, Badnews: It sucks; Goodnews: You get a date with the office sex pot, Badnews: She dances with everyone but you at the club; Goodnews: She takes you home, Badnews: She has a friend staying over and won’t have you in; Goodnews: all the guys at work are cheering for you, Badnews: They are sitting in a car watching as you leave her door rejected… and on and on and on.
Yet Pete and Joey, perhaps because they’re stupid, always maintain a glimmer of optimism. This is a comedy, like Candide, but it is a very dark comedy and it is questionable if it was intended to be funny.
Doug McGrath, who plays Pete, went on to bit parts in a number of other interesting movies: the highly recommend The Rowdyman, plus Black Christmas, Helter Skelter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet, Bronco Billy, Pale Rider, Twilight Zone: The Movie and Porky’s.
