Description: A charming little downbeat drama this is delivered by notorious sleaze-merchant Yasuharu Hasebe (Rape! 13th Hour and Assault! Jack The Ripper). The English title ‘Rape!’ has to be taken literately. A pretty, young librarian walks home one night and is brutally mugged and raped by a masked guy with a knife! The rapist has made the elevator stop between two floors. It is a long bleak scene even with a group of people outside who unaware of the crime tries to reach the elevator with no luck. The poor girl is almost a vegetable after being ripped off her virginity in such a heinous way. She try to keep it for herself to avoid the shame but people discover that something is changed about her. The other sex-crazed women at her work thinks it is just wonderful that she finally has had sex! ‘Rape!’ follows a ‘Repulsion’-esque formula. The girl has previously been disgusted by the very obvious sexual activity of her co-workers and still is, but the rape has also awakened a deviancy inside her. Her rage really kicks in when she again is raped by her boss, and she start to almost invite men to exploit her in her hunt for the first rapist, who we also see in parallel running scenes. There is scenes of strange sensualism which add a rather surreal element to this grim and nihilistic character study. ‘Rape!’ is basically just a deranged skin-flick, but it is competently directed and acted, and there is a little more going on than just endless skin expose. It in a pretty interesting way. Unfortunately a there should have been used a little more time on this final scene as it is very short and stops rather abruptly.
