Review of Double Obsession movie: This is one thriller that will have you screaming…with laughter. Margaux Hemmingway’s performance as Heather a lesbian librarian, is hilarious, though I’m not sure that’s the intention. The first hint we have of her obsession is when she kisses the young daughter of Claire (an ex-lover) full on the lips. The story then harks back to their supposed relationship. You really have to take their word for it as the presentation is very chaste. Claire, played by the lovely Maryam D’Abo, is now going straight – a state of affairs that unhinges Heather even more. She then becomes obsessed with another young women and to prove how much she wants her, she breaks her leg to keep them together. Hovering in the background is a drunken Frederick Forrest in a role that can best be described as ‘undefined’.
It’s hard to put into words what a mess this is. The non linear narrative doesn’t help but then you have to consider the bizarre performances. Hemmingway’s looks like a career-ender, and sure enough she’s only appeared in a couple of minor films since. D’Abo wears a ‘how did I get into this mess’ expression throughout. And well she might. No thrills, even less sex and – this is one obsession to avoid.
