Description: Holocaust drama by the Director of The Battle of Algiers and starring Susan Strasberg (daughter of Lee Strasberg, founder of the Actors’ Studio and pioneer of the American version of ‘The Method’).
Kapò is unusual among dramas about the Holocaust in that it portrays the camp inmates as complex fallible human beings and not as faceless victims of evil. Although the story has some melodramatic moments the overall effect is very very powerful, even today. Considering this was made in 1959 the achievment is remarkable. As always with Pontecorvo’s films, the music is excellent.
Pontecorvo is one of cinemas greatest ‘political’ artists. His best known films are The Battle of Algiers and Burn(aka Quemada) starring Marlon Brando. Two less well known, but highly recommended
