Also known as: Kumo no hitomi,
Description: Sho Aikawa (who also starred in Missing 55 and Married Women) is Nijima, a teacher who gets his revenge on the man who murdered his daughter six years ago by kidnapping him, tying him to a chair, then starving and beating him to death over the course of a week in one of those abandoned buildings crowded, cramped Tokyo seems so full of. Then the movie actually starts. With his revenge fulfilled Nijima is left empty and just goes through the motions, repeatedly running into Iwamatsu, an old high school friend in charge of an import-export company. Almost on a whim Nijima leaves his job to work for Iwamatsu and finds out the company is actually a yakuza crew. Initially stamping papers day in and day out while a young thug rollerblades around the empty office, Nijima steps up to the plate and becomes the gang’s new hitter. Kurosawa gives us a slow boiler sort-of-but-not-really yakuza about revenge and how its vindictiveness doesn’t go away, but finds new targets to lash out at.
Review: This film is not intended to be a spectator. On the contrary, the director tries to draw the viewer’s attention to a vision problem, force the viewer to think and reason. But, in my opinion, the story still limping. After watching the film I was left with enough questions “why” and “why.” And all of them on the details of the movie, not the idea.
Detail to justify their point of view, I would have had to open the movie’s plot. Of course, I will not spoil for you and leave the choice to watch or not. The film does not hold in suspense, the story is calm and unhurried.
