Description: Joan the Maid 2 is the 2nd part of Jacques Rivette’s (La religieuse) epic six-hour long film adaptation of the Joan of Arc story. Whilst not in the league of Carl Dreyer’s 1928 masterpiece La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, it is nonetheless a compelling and artistically pleasing entry in the ever-growing catalogue of Joan of Arc films.
In 1992-93, Jacques Rivette, one of the representatives of the “new wave” in his usual leisurely manner extremely detailed account of his version of events in the Novels “Jeanne-virgin: Battles” and “Joan of virgin: Prisons.” Rivett, who was born in Rouen in 1928 (when Dreyer shot his film about Joan), seemed doomed to put this film. He sought to interpret the facts as objectively as possible and detached. This led to his monumental five-a-half-hour fresco was only fair illustration of the well-known events in French history. On the role of Joan, he chose Sandrine Bonnaire, experienced and talented actress, which he has not given the space to create a complete image. Not wishing to participate in the debate about the nature of phenomena Jeanne miracle, he just said the peasant look of the heroine – a low commoner with a stubborn character.
