Description: This is one of Lee Marvin’s last films and perhaps his most surreal. Dog Day was originally distributed in France as Canicule and was was based on the book Herman, a novel by Jean Vautrin. Marvin portrays a gunman on the lam with girlfriend Tina Louise . He briefly takes refuge with a farm family whose bizarre excesses make Marvin’s former criminal associates seem like choirboys. The hypersexual sister of the family assaults any male past puberty (including farmhands as well as her brothers) and blackmails Marvin into letting her have her way with him. The wife of the household (Miou-Miou) falls in love with Marvin, to the extent of planning his escape when the law catches up with him. There are several strange sub-plots to the film which involve children who believe they are French pirates, sexual depravity, and bazookas.
Yves Boisset has been an assistant (of Riccardo Freda, notably) and second unit director on numerous italian movies back in the 60’s. He remains one of the few french filmmakers who are true gender movie lovers. His career alternates crime films and more politicaly oriented works. A lot of his movies are portraying french people on their very worst sides. He often had terrible critical reviews for being not subtle enough and “Canicule” is one of his most outrageous movies ! Gross, violent, surrealist and offensive, with an incredible bunch of beyond help characters, it’s not his best movie (there’s actually plenty of flaws out there) but it’s certainly one the funniest to watch !
