Have I ever told you how much I LOATH shot-on-video movies?
No?…well then, allow me to elaborate….
I HATE S-O-V with every molecule in my body with a mouth-foaming passion, I learned this from the ripe age of 15 when I mistakenly rented a new release in 1988 titled “Death Row Diner” from the local vhs shop I used to ride my bicycle to every few days for new rentals.
After sticking that turd in my VCR (sorry old friend) my mouth was agape at the home-made atrocity that burned into my retinas, I guess my eyes and my mind had been spoiled by watching the likes of films like Toxic Avenger, Evil Dead 2, Street Trash, I Spit On Your Grave, Dawn of the Dead. ect.
I vowed then to never rent another new title unless I knew for sure that it was shot on FILM.
Unfortunately, it only got worse, as this type of shit-movie making became an acceptable trend with retailers & renters, cause they just kept shucking out more and more of these dead rats.
This is also why I can’t get into the whole HDTV’s and BluRay technology/gimmick trend, cause every movie I seen on an HDTV screen just looks like it’s shot live or on video, with the kind of camera’s they use for daytime soap opera’s, and when the picture is SO perfect and clear, it goes beyond any ‘film’ movie experience I’ve ever had, I like my dirt particles, scratches, sound pops and film damage, thank you very much.
I have made 2 exceptions to the rule, one with this movie cause the presents of Al Lewis and Duane Jones was barley enough to save this cockamamie direct-to-home-video, and The Ripper because of Savini.
Anyway, about the movie at hand….
Two stories about witches and Satanic cults, the first one seems to be the better of the two, with a topless all girl cult lead by Grandpa Munster Al Lewis, with some monsters and demons summoned at the end, as for the second story, I couldn’t follow it, but it had Duane Jones, the hero from Night of the Living Dead (1968) and takes place in a haunted dorm on a college campus with some stop-motion animated poop or fungus or something.
The sound is terrible, I think due to tracking as it jumps, clicks and flutters in and out between stereo & mono, but it only adds to the charm of this….whatever.
