Description: The basic premise of City of the Living Dead begins when a priest hangs himself in a local cemetery. When he does the Gates of Hell are opened, allowing the dead to come back and haunt the New England town of Dunwich. During a seance, Mary channels visions of the hanging, and passes out from the intensity of these recollections. She is then presumed (mistakenly) for dead and subsequently buried. Luckily she is exhumed before expiring for real, but when she wakes up, she finds out that her visions weren’t just morbid dreams, but a sign that the portal between worlds has opened, and that according to the book of Enoch, hell is now here on Earth. The movie which is quite familiar with this one is The Evil Dead
Review: By conventional standards, City of the Living Dead is completely irrational- with its jarring cuts, extravagant gore, grotesque imagery and sledgehammer direction. Unlike other directors who spiced their films with splatter and little else, Fulci understood that narrative can be absurdly deficient and still hold a sense of form and structure. This movie is an intriguing, if flawed, hybrid of Dario Argento and Mario Bava’s divine visual styles, whereby even the most perverse scenes of exposed entrails and bloodletting carry a subconscious shred of significance. What remains is something akin to an arthouse title, with its almost elegent surrealism, but still far too crude for mainstream acceptance. The resulting fusion of ambience and physical force makes for a moody, hallucinatory experience. So, if you liked this film then you can watch Return of the Evil Dead which has been release in the 1973 by the famous director Amando de Ossorio.

God, I remember renting this one as a kid and being so fucking disappointed with it.
It’s gotten a bit better as I’ve gotten older, but still not the best of the zombie crop.

I love movies where people who I think are going to survive till the end of the film get killed. In fact, with a great plot and plenty of gruesome deaths I liked just about everything in this movie. Highly recommended!
