Pupi Avati’s LA CASA DALLE FINESTRE CHE RIDONO (1976) and ZEDER (1983) have long been two of my favourite Eurocult films, with their unusual blend of intelligent horror, a sense of mounting paranoia and general gothic ambience. Whilst these two films have eventually made it onto nice quality DVDs, for some bizarre reason Avati’s other ‘proper’ horror film, 1996’s L’ARCANO INCANTATORE, is still languishing unreleased in some Italian film company vault. Indeed, the only official release the film has ever had was on Italian VHS. The only way to see the film with English subtitles has been via a very poor quality bootleg of a screener. It’s a great shame as it’s an especially attractively photographed film, with a carefully constructed soundtrack – and neither of these aspects are well served by VHS. There is also a very nice score by Pino Donaggio.
