Description: At one point in the film, a nightie-clad woman asks director Amy Lynn Best (star of one vampire B movie A Feast of Flesh), “So, we’re actresses playing actresses who are making a horror movie, right?” That just about sums up SPLATTER MOVIE: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT, a film made with no small measure of ambition and no small confusion over how to use it. It’s a movie about the making of a movie that’s about the making of a movie interrupted by a serial killer, and how the making of the movie (not the movie-within-the-movie) is similarly stalked by a bloodthirsty psycho. (In case you didn’t get it, the name of the film within the film is entitled “Tesseract.”)
Small review of the movie: Look, I ain’t gonna lie to you. This thing is an enormously misfired convoluted clusterfuck. There’s an idea here, an idea to explore the relationship between maker and viewer in horror cinema and the enduring popularity of the genre. The idea, it seems, got away from the makers at some point during the plot’s genesis. There’s a few bits worth watching anyway. But don’t come crying to me if you feel a bit empty afterwards.
