Description:
Cresse fancied himself in the macho mold of Sam Peckinpah (although he wasn’t a drinker), and toward the end of the sixties he took the roughie genre in a Western direction. He sank more money than usual into the making and promotion of a film called Hot Spur (1968) which he billed as a “western with the scope and quality of the largest studio… and the blatant rawness of a Saturday Night smoker film.” Convinced this was a his big smash, Cresse went wild on promotion, plastering 24-sheets in key cities, running radio spots, the works…
Hot Spur was the archetypical Cresse production: filled with cruel sadistic men abusing attractive women, It did prove to be Cresse’s crowning achievement, at least critically, due in full measure to William F. Buckley’s conservative [I]National Review[/I], which was liberal enough to include the film on it’s Ten Best List of 1969.”
