Description: Ditvoorst liked to deal with current issues in his films from society in a satirical way.
ANTENNA is a parody of the hippie movement that bears aesthetic similarities with THE WICKER MAN. The story is about Aquarius, a lonely eccentric artist who sails with a homemade raft on the river Scheldt (where the director Ditvoorst would later drown himself himself in 1987 after decades of depression and drug abuse). Along the way he arrives at a Catholic convent where nuns hold conservative sway. Inside the monastery there is strict dictatorship, sex education does not exist and the liberty of the individual must give way under the yoke of faith.
ANTENNA provides an iconoclastic satire of the hippie zeitgeist. The film is a typical work of Ditvoorst : freedom of the individual , the desire for a utopia that does not exist, the lonely and misunderstood artist, an aversion to the state, bureaucracy and religious authorities , absurd bijpersonages etc. The film has little dialogue and is largely told through images of cinematographer Jan de Bont.
