Review: When you begin to the works of Jean Rollin, it is difficult to determine who is he – either a genius or a talentless hack. But as you penetrating deeply in his filmography you are convincing with the first. The fact is that his style is unique and inimitable. Films of Jean Rollin are difficult to perceive, there are few speakers, few words …
While other directors make a movie for the audience, Jean, it seems, isn’t interested in them. But if you look at his work from a different angle, then they may be very interesting. Some critics called him a French poet in the film making, and with that I totally agree. Rollin has always stood apart from the mainstream, not trying to imitate any genre, and so his films are poorly defined in the genre affiliation.
The Grapes of Death is a quite unique movie. In the heyday of the genre of the walking deads, Rollin creates his own version, not embedded in the usual framework. His “deads” are quite different, they are still real people, but evil prevails over other qualities. And so they are able to kill without batting an eye. For example, in one scene, a man, unable to overcome his emotions, cuts off the head of his beloved …
Common cause of illness was the wine, collected from the vineyards, which saw the entire village, marking the harvest festival. But before that, some vineyards were sprayed with chemicals that caused the disease. And then, in ’78, Rollin shows an environmental factor of influence on the man who dared to affect the nature. This is evidenced by a dialogue between two peasants who were dissatisfied with nuclear power plants and military bases in the country.
Summarizing the review, we can say that this is one of the best works of the director (but not the best), and it must be seen by all fans of eurocult, because The Grapes of Death deserves it.
