Review: Whoa Nelly! What’s THIS? A DVD from Alpha Video that’s not only widescreen but doesn’t have all the characteristic (of them) scratchy old prints and lousy quality? Shocking. And this obscure little Spanish vampire film isn’t half bad either. What can you say about a film that opens with jazzy music playing over a visual of maggots and worms crawling in a grave? Well, yuck, maybe. But this is a low budget Spanish film with a reasonably decent atmosphere to it and a cool little soundtrack. Some travelers are stranded in a small European town and when they arrive there’s no one around, but that’s at NIGHT and in the daylight the remainder of the populace shows up. What’s left of them, that is. Seems like this sleepy little town is populated by vampires, one of them being the Countess, who sends this big ugly brute out to do her shopping for her groceries to feed the guests, with an ax, that is. In other words some townsfolk make do with less limbs than normal. Overall this is no work of cinematic genius but it’s a cool little early 70’s film and if you like European films of the late 60’s/early 70’s you’ll probably enjoy this. Not bad at all, 7 out of 10.
