Description: The film was produced during the “Eroguro” movement in Japan, in which there were a number of bizarre films made featuring Erotic and Grotesque elements. In The Vampire Moth the titular criminal murders nude models — and the film features young actresses baring their breasts.
This is part of a series of movies about Kosuke Kindaichi, a famous fictional Japanese detective created by Seishi Yokomizo, a renowned mystery novelist. His first case, The Honjin Murder Case, a story of locked room murder in an old family, which many people regard as one of the best Japanese detective stories, was published in 1946.
Kindaichi was the star of 77 different stories and dozens of other film adaptations, a clever but humble detective with a bad case of dandruff (someone called him “the Japanese Columbo”).
The detective usually investigates mysteries with supernatural elements which, in the end, prove to have non-supernatural explanations (in the Scooby Doo style).
Still, the horror elements are here; the killer wears a scary mask with jagged teeth, and some of the scenes have a definite eerie quality to them. There’s a number of striking scenes here; the discovery of a corpse on a raised platform, a dance scene in which all we see are six pairs of legs when there are only five dancers in good health…
