Description: A modern interpretation of the immortal novel by Alexandre Dumas, made a classic erotic filmmaker Radley Metzger (The Image)

Review of Camille 2000 movie: Radley Metzger’s wonderful film is ‘inspired’ by the Alexandre Dumas classic Le Dames aux camelias, a tale of love, and betrayal, here transposed to Rome circa 1969. I’m not sure where the ‘2000’ of the title fits in but no matter. This is an Italian production so everything is tip-top, with great photography, stunning sets and dazzling costumes. At the heart of the matter stands Margaurite Gautier, a troubled socialite played to perfection by the sensual French actress Daniele Gaubert. She glides around the extravagant surroundings in a world of her own, having found the man of her dreams.

The strength of the source novel is its prose, notoriously difficult to film. Metzger compensates by keeping the dialogue functional and letting the visuals do the rest. And so we see Rome, a decadent dream world that creates a narrative of it own – la dolce vita, the sex, the clothes and the beautiful women that adorn them. How can true love compete? Margaurite is about to find out, the hard way.
