Description: “Joon-ho Bong’s “Memories of Murder” is an enthralling exploration of a crumbling world reminiscent of a dark Korean folklore. This film is rich in metaphor and symbology. It is based on the true story of a serial killer that haunted a small provincial town for years. The movie weaves together elements of social commentary, suspense, and crime investigation, blending them in a way that each genre enhances the others, offering a multifaceted interpretation of the unfolding events. The movie’s grim reality is tinged with sharp irony and scathing satire. A key aspect of the film is its straightforward, almost minimalist storytelling approach. It seems to mirror life with all its contradictory complexities. The film’s narrative centers around the quest to apprehend a notorious criminal. The case is tackled by three distinctive characters: the local, somewhat unsophisticated Detective Park, the eager civilian volunteer Zhu, and the more methodical officer from Seoul. While their investigative techniques differ, they always find themselves just behind the killer—whether due to his intelligence or sheer luck. Through these characters, Joon-ho Bong presents various archetypes of “justice enforcers” and offers a commentary on diverse perspectives towards police work and societal norms. Bong masterfully portrays how ill-equipped and ineffective provincial police forces can be, particularly when searching for a dangerous criminal. Despite their shortcomings, there is an endearing naivety to all the characters. As law enforcement officers become preoccupied with the grand pursuit of the serial killer, they also find themselves entangled in everyday struggles. This theme is exemplified right from the opening scene, in which a cop heads to a field where a young girl’s body has been found, only to discover children innocently tampering with the evidence. The cop must chase after them in a futile effort to preserve any potential leads.”
